Victorinox was founded way back in 1884, in the town of Ibach, where they used to make pen knives and other blades. Victorinox got its name from the founder's mother, Victoria, and Inox, a type of stainless steel in French. In the 1890s, the Swiss Army changed its gear requirements and started buying small folding knives for their soldiers, unlike most other armies that use big cumbersome fighting knives.
The Founder, Karl Elsener, got the idea to incorporate all the small tools a soldier needs in the knife's handle. The first Swiss Army Knife was made in 1897, and became the official pocket knife of the Swiss Armed Forces. Swiss Army Knives became famous in World War 2, when American soldiers began buying them and using them for tasks around the camp.
